Ogiwara smiles bitter smile

Kenji Ogiwara of Japan, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the team event, smiles a bitter smile after learning that he was 15th in the first jump of the ski jumping portion of the Nagano Olympic Nordic combined individual event Feb. 13. He was eventually placed ninth and will face an uphill struggle over the demanding Snow Harp course as he makes a bid for his first Olympic medal in the individual event.

Lazutina snares 2nd cross country skiing

Veteran Larissa Lazutina shares Russia's second gold medal of the Nagano Winter Olympics on Feb. 10, slicing through a veil of snow in Hakuba to win the women's 5-kilometer classical cross country skiing event. Lazutina, the silver medalist in the 15-km classical event on Feb. 8, kicked strongly down the final stretch of the Snow Harp course to take the gold medal with a time of 17 minutes, 37.9 seconds.

Vik wins nordic combined World Cup event

HAKUBA, Japan - Olympic and world champion Bjarte Engen Vik of Norway eases to his third nordic combined World Cup win of the season on Feb. 6 with a steady performance in heavy snow at the Snow Harp cross country course in Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture.
